How I 'tries' to improve on my english

Even since young, English has always been a subject that I loathe a lot as I never seems to be able to do well in it no matter how hard I tries. A huge part of the reason is because I rarely converse in English with my friends and classmates but rather in Chinese which I am more comfortable in.It was only when I received my O level result for English subject that it struck me that it is time to buck up on my English.

In order to tackle my poor English (which it is still now), I have taken various steps to improve it, which includes:

1)      Learning by listening and watching
Instead of simply watching drama or listening to music, I will focus on how the actors/singers articulate his/her lines or use certain vocabulary that is totally alien to me.

2)      Journey entry for vocabulary that I stumbled upon
Upon hearing or learning of a new word, I will jot it down in a journey entry and write down a short definition for each of them.

3)      Practice make perfect
In layman terms, just converse and write more in English.

From the above three methods that I employed, I find that I does not stutter as much as before when I am conversing in English. Furthermore, I managed to have a greater vocabulary pool to choose from as compared to the past.

In conclusion, I will highly recommend these three methods that I have employed to improve my English to fellow amateurs that are trying to master their English as well. Not only is these three methods quick and effective but also circumstances that we are most likely to encounter in our daily routine or rather can try to practice in our daily routine.

  1. Hi Jie Rui! I also have tried your methods. I really think they are helpful, but also hard to keep doing itl. My advise is that you can combine them together, like when watching moives, you can jot down the word that you don't understand together with the whole lines. Thus, you can have a better understanding and can also have the subconscious to use it when you have the similar situation. Cheer up! I believe we can do better through this course!

  2. This is a creative and entertaining "reflection," Jie Rui, though technically speaking it does not respond to the prompt assignment. (This is not a reflection.) I won't be so condemning of your effort this time around since this short essay is quite cute. Your suggested methods may be of interest to your classmates as well. However, for future assignment, you will need to follow the directions.

As for your language use, when I read your prose I'm not even sure if you are making the various mistakes noted below out of neglect/poor self editing, from a lack of basic understanding of the grammar conventions, or as a joke. In any case, you need to be more careful.

In the spirit of making an effort at improving your language use in Es1102, let's look at these items:

    1) Even since young, English has always been a subject that I loathe a lot as I never seems to be able to do well in it no matter how hard I tries. > (misplacement of the opening phrase/verb tense error/subject verb disagreement)

Look at the difference: Even since young, I have loathed English as a subject that I never have seemed to be able to do well in, no matter how hard I have tried.

    DO YOU UNDERSTAND THE CHANGES?

    2) ...that it is time to buck up on my English. > (verb tense inconsistency)

    3) which includes... > (subject verb disagreement)

    4) his/her lines > their lines (plural, right?)

    5) a journey > a journal

    6) Practice make... / I does not stutter.... / is these three methods... > (subject verb disagreement)

    7) ... but also circumstances that we are most likely to encounter in our daily routine or rather can try to practice in our daily routine. > incomplete clause---what is the verb connected to circumstances?

I look forward to your effort this term!
